Indonesia Has the Best Quality Rattan in the World

Jakarta – The best quality rattan in the world is produced from Indonesian forests. Indonesian rattan has excellent durability and flexibility.

“The number one quality of rattan in the world is manau rattan produced in West Sumatra. Then the second best quality is rattan kertes which is produced near Nias Island, namely Enggano Island,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Handicraft Furniture Association (AMKRI) Sunoto when met after the International Furniture event. Expo 2014 at JIExpo Kemayoran Jakarta, Tuesday (11/03/2014).

Sunoto said that Manau rattan has a durable quality and high flexibility compared to other rattans.

Especially for Kertes rattan besides being produced on Enggano Island, this type of rattan is also easily found in forest areas around Ambon and Papua. Unfortunately, this type of rattan is not widely known and used by entrepreneurs of Indonesian wood products.

“The quality of rattan kertes is very good, but unfortunately it has not been explored too much,” he added.

He also explained that of the total 235 species of rattan in the world, the majority are in Indonesian forests.
