The Ministry of Industry, in its official website, said that around 85 percent of the raw materials for rattan worldwide are products from Indonesian forests. The rest came from other Asian countries such as the Philippines and Vietnam.

 

In Indonesia, this plant grows in many forests in various regions. Well, here are some rattan-producing areas in Indonesia

 

1. Aceh

 

Aceh is one of the areas on the island of Sumatra that produces the largest rattan plant in Indonesia. One of the types of rattan that they produce themselves is the ‘Slimit’ type. Rattan forests are widely spread in various areas in Aceh from the north, south, east to west.

 

These areas are North Aceh, South Aceh, East Aceh, West Aceh, Singkil, Nagan Raya, Subulussalam, Southwest Aceh, Pidie, to Aceh Tamiang. Reporting from acehbisnis, every year Aceh is recorded to produce around 250,000 tons of raw rattan. They will then send the harvested crops to Medan and Cirebon as raw materials for handicrafts.

 

Thanks to this production, Aceh has contributed 35% as a provider of rattan needs in the world. You don’t need to doubt the quality of rattan raw materials from Aceh with its contribution to the world market.

 

2. North Sumatra

 

North Sumatra is one of the rattan-producing areas on the island of Sumatra. There are more than one species that grow in North Sumatra. Types that exist in North Sumatra, namely the types of Worms, Manau, Sap, Semambu, Sega, and Stone.

 

Several areas in North Sumatra that produce this plant, namely Langkat, Toba Samosir, Central Tapanuli, and Mandailing Natal.

 

3. Katingan, Central Kalimantan

 

Katingan Regency is one of the places that is famous as a producer of rattan in Indonesia. It is recorded that as many as 600 to 800 tons of rattan are harvested and produced in Katingan Regency every month.

 

The forest is spread over 10 sub-districts in Katingan Regency which is quite famous as a producer of rattan. The types that Katingan Regency produces itself, namely Taman (Irit and Sega), Sabutan, and Manau. In addition, this area also produces handicrafts that have typical motifs from the Dayak tribe such as tingang and kemang birds.

 

4. Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan

 

Banjarmasin is another area in Kalimantan which is quite famous as a producer of rattan. The people of Banjarmasin themselves have made this plant a source of livelihood.

 

Usually in addition to the results that are useful as local handicrafts in Banjarmasin, they also send this harvest to Cirebon. The products they send are usually in semi-finished form.

 

5. Palu, Central Sulawesi

 

Just like Aceh, Central Sulawesi is one of the regions in Indonesia that produces a lot of rattan. In fact, 60% of the total rattan production in Indonesia comes from Palu City, Central Sulawesi.

 

In addition, there are 38 types of rattan in the forests of Central Sulawesi, such as Tohiti, Merah, Ronti, Batang, Susu and so on.
